The City of Clayton will temporarily close Clayton Community Park on Mondays and Tuesdays for four consecutive weeks beginning October 12, 2026, to conduct an intensive municipal pest management campaign targeting burrowing rodents. The scheduled closures will allow certified pest control contractors to safely treat pervasive gopher and ground squirrel colonies that have damaged playing fields, landscaped hillsides, and pedestrian walkways across the 20-acre municipal park facility. Municipal officials announced the coordinated program following extensive turf assessments conducted by public works inspectors.

The temporary park shutdowns will affect local youth sports teams, dog walkers, and fitness enthusiasts who regularly gather at the popular community recreation complex along the base of Mount Diablo. While daytime access to athletic diamonds and playgrounds will be restricted on treatment days, municipal leaders emphasized that eradicating burrowing rodents is essential to eliminate severe ankle-injury hazards and protect expensive public turf investments. Local sports leagues have adjusted their weekday practice schedules to ensure youth athletes remain active while municipal treatments take place.

Clayton Community Park has long contended with subterranean rodent populations migrating from adjacent regional open spaces and ranchlands into cultivated municipal parklands. The Clayton City Council and city administration authorized the targeted remediation plan after maintenance crews reported that conventional localized trapping could no longer manage expanding rodent colonies. Municipal guidelines require certified contractors to use environmentally controlled, non-broadcast methods designed to safeguard domestic pets, native raptors, and surrounding wildlife habitats throughout the treatment window.

The recurring park closures are scheduled for October 12–13, October 19–20, October 26–27, and November 2–3, 2026, with all main park gates closed to public entry from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. To prevent traffic disruption for local school families, the lower parking lot adjacent to the lower baseball field off Marsh Creek Road will remain completely open and accessible for student drop-offs and pick-ups serving nearby Diablo View Middle School. Residents seeking detailed information regarding the pest control products and safety protocols can contact the Clayton Maintenance Department at (925) 673-7300.

Clayton Community Park will reopen for full public recreation each Wednesday through Sunday during the four-week maintenance period, permitting normal weekend youth sports tournaments and family outings to proceed without interruption. Following the final November treatment session, municipal maintenance crews will conduct routine monitoring and perform targeted follow-up maintenance to ensure turf stability. Updated park advisory notices and field status reports will be posted on the official City of Clayton website.
