Civic leaders with the City of Lafayette, librarians from the Contra Costa County Library system, and trustees of the Lafayette Library and Learning Center Foundation dedicated a solar-powered outdoor reading amphitheater, Wi-Fi 7 study tables, and a native pollinator rain garden on Sunday afternoon in the south courtyard of the Lafayette Library and Learning Center at 3491 Mt. Diablo Boulevard (at First Street) in downtown Lafayette. Welcoming more than 310,000 annual Lamorinda patrons for lectures, children's storytimes, and S.T.E.M. workshops, the library is downtown Lafayette's cultural anchor.

In the sunlit amphitheater courtyard overlooking Golden Gate Way, carpenters replaced weathered concrete benches with three wide semicircular tiers of FSC-certified Western red cedar deck seating connected by an integrated bluestone wheelchair ramp. Overhead, a 44-foot steel-and-timber acoustic pergola fitted with translucent bifacial solar glass panels filters 85 percent of midday sun while generating 7.8 kilowatts of clean electricity.

Power from the pergola roof charges an integrated 18-kilowatt-hour battery wall that feeds sixteen weatherproof AC and 100-watt USB-C laptop charging ports built directly into eight cedar outdoor study tables, along with dual tri-band outdoor Wi-Fi 7 access points and warm 2,700-Kelvin reading sconces. Around the courtyard perimeter, a 1,200-square-foot cobble bioswale planted with California iris, redbud, and hummingbirds' sage captures rooftop rainwater.

The $340,000 courtyard transformation was funded by generous community donors to the Lafayette Library and Learning Center Foundation and a City of Lafayette civic facilities grant. Free author lecture series and autumn outdoor reading program calendars are posted on the Lafayette Library Foundation Portal.
