The East Bay Regional Park District will celebrate the golden jubilee of the historic Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail this weekend, welcoming community members, cyclists, and civic leaders to a special commemorative open house and historic exhibit preview in Lafayette. The milestone celebration honors fifty years of continuous public recreation along the 7.65-mile paved linear parkway, which was among the earliest and most successful railway-to-trail conversion projects completed in the state of California. Commemorative activities will showcase newly installed interpretive signage detailing the corridor's rich transit heritage.
The tree-shaded regional greenway represents a cornerstone of everyday life across the Lamorinda communities, serving tens of thousands of pedestrians, recreational runners, student commuters, and cycling enthusiasts each month. Stretching seamlessly from downtown Lafayette through Moraga to Saint Mary's College, the trail offers a tranquil, vehicle-free transportation artery connecting residential neighborhoods to commercial centers, public schools, and community athletic fields. Park district directors emphasized that the trail stands as an enduring testament to visionary local citizen activism that protected public open space from commercial subdivision.
Originally established in the late nineteenth century as the Sacramento Northern Railroad right-of-way, the corridor carried electric passenger trains and agricultural freight through the East Bay hills until rail operations ceased in the mid-twentieth century. In 1976, the East Bay Regional Park District, in close partnership with local civic leaders and municipal advocates, officially opened the converted corridor as a public multi-use trail. The newly unveiled anniversary exhibit features archival historical photographs, vintage railroad artifacts, and educational panels celebrating the native plant ecology of the Moraga Valley watershed.
The anniversary open house is scheduled for Saturday, October 10, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the trail staging area adjacent to the Lafayette Community Park, located at 480 Saint Mary's Road. Event attendees will enjoy guided ranger nature walks, historical walking lectures, commemorative cycling giveaways, and light refreshments provided by the regional park foundation. Community members seeking further details regarding trail access, equestrian rules, or anniversary exhibits can contact the East Bay Regional Park District administrative headquarters by telephone at (888) 327-2757.
Park district officials confirmed that commemorative historical markers and enhanced native tree plantings will be installed along the entire trail length through the remainder of the calendar year. Regional planning liaisons noted that ongoing collaboration with municipal public works departments continues to upgrade crosswalk signalization and pavement smoothness across all public road crossings. Comprehensive trail system maps, historic photo archives, and upcoming Lamorinda park programming remain accessible through the official East Bay Regional Park District website.
