The Lafayette City Council and the Bay Area Rapid Transit District finalized an inter-agency partnership agreement on Wednesday to fund and construct a major expansion of the secure bicycle facility and regional trail interconnects at the Lafayette BART station. Convening at the mobility transit concourse on Deer Hill Road in Lafayette, regional transit planners and Lamorinda active transportation advocates approved construction documents that will add 120 electronic on-demand bike lockers, dedicated electric bicycle charging pedestals, and a public maintenance workstand adjacent to the station plaza.

The capital investment addresses surging daily bicycle ridership from commuters who utilize the scenic paved Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail and Olympic Boulevard bike lanes to reach rapid rail connections into Oakland, Berkeley, and downtown San Francisco. City planners reported that existing outdoor bike racks frequently reach full capacity before 8:00 a.m. on weekdays, compelling frustrated riders to chain bicycles to perimeter fences or resort to solo vehicular driving along congested Highway 24.

Funding for the $850,000 intermodal project is provided through Contra Costa Transportation Authority Measure J local sales tax revenues paired with regional clean air transit improvement grants. In addition to secure locker pods, contractors will stripe high-visibility green safety bike lanes, widen pedestrian curb ramps, and install upgraded directional wayfinding signage linking the station platform directly to downtown Lafayette merchant corridors and the nearby community library.

Lamorinda commuters, cyclists, and local residents can review the bicycle locker access protocols, register electronic smart access cards, and download regional trail interconnect maps online at bart.gov/stations/lafy. Questions regarding project construction schedules and municipal bicycle master plans may be directed to the Lafayette Planning and Building Department at (925) 284-1968 Monday through Friday.
