Lafayette Community Foundation Funds Expanded Solar-Powered Bike Hub at Lafayette BART Station
New secure on-demand bike lockers, e-bike charging docks, and digital repair kiosks open to ease regional highway commute congestion along Highway 24.

Commuters and cycling advocates dedicated a state-of-the-art micro-mobility pavilion at the Lafayette BART Station on Tuesday morning, unveiling forty-eight solar-powered electronic bike lockers and high-speed charging docks designed to encourage multi-modal regional transit.
The green infrastructure installation was made possible through a $210,000 capital endowment from the Lafayette Community Foundation, matched by clean transportation funds from the Contra Costa Transportation Authority. Positioned adjacent to the north passenger entrance on Deer Hill Road, the enclosed pavilion provides secure smartphone-activated bicycle storage, illuminated tool workstations, and digital tire inflation pumps for daily Lamorinda commuters.
BART board representatives reported that daily bicycle and electric scooter boardings at Lafayette have surged by 34 percent over the past eighteen months as residents seek alternatives to congested rush-hour delays along the Highway 24 Caldecott Tunnel corridor. The solar roof canopy supplies 100 percent of the facility's power needs, feeding surplus green electricity back into the station's localized electrical grid.
Lamorinda bicycle coalition leaders praised the project during the ribbon-cutting ceremony, noting that secure parking eliminates bike theft anxieties that frequently deter residents from pedaling down from hillside neighborhoods. The facility is directly linked to the Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail via freshly restriped green bike lanes and protected pedestrian crosswalks on Happy Valley Road and Mount Diablo Boulevard.
Commuters can register for electronic locker access and purchase monthly rental credits using their regional Clipper transit cards or through the official BART smartphone application. The Lafayette Community Foundation will host an introductory commuter workshop and free safety gear giveaway at the station pavilion on Thursday, October 22, from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Transit coordinators indicated that similar micro-mobility hubs are currently being evaluated for neighboring stations in Orinda and Walnut Creek.
