Contra Costa County Library librarians and trustees of the Lafayette Library and Learning Center Foundation unveiled a new Library of Things Astronomical Telescope Lending Collection on Friday afternoon at the Lafayette Library campus at 3491 Mt. Diablo Boulevard. Developed in technical partnership with volunteer astronomers from the Mount Diablo Astronomical Society, the program places ten ruggedized Orion StarBlast 4.5-inch parabolic reflector telescopes into public circulation for Lamorinda families, students, and amateur stargazers. Beginning Saturday, October 24, any adult or teen patron holding a valid Contra Costa County Library card in good standing can check out a complete telescope kit for a fourteen-day loan period at zero cost.

To make backyard stargazing approachable for first-time observers, Mount Diablo Astronomical Society volunteers modified each tabletop Dobsonian mount with a permanently tethered zoom eyepiece (8mm to 24mm), a red-dot reflex finder scope, a clip-on universal smartphone camera adapter for lunar photography, and a red-light night-vision headlamp. Every padded carrying tote also includes a laminated autumn and winter Northern California sky chart highlighting Saturn's rings, the Pleiades star cluster, the Andromeda Galaxy, and the Orion Nebula.

With its wide-field f/4 parabolic mirror and compact seventeen-pound wooden base, the telescope sets up on any patio table or park bench in less than two minutes without requiring complex equatorial counterweights or tripod alignment. Between patron checkouts, library foundation volunteers inspect mirror collimation and clean optical surfaces at the library's second-floor makerspace desk.

To celebrate the collection launch, the Lafayette Library and Learning Center will host a free public "Star Party on the Amphitheater Plaza" on Friday evening, October 30, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the corner of Mt. Diablo Boulevard and First Street. Residents can place holds on the telescope kits or register for the stargazing orientation workshop on the Lafayette Library and Learning Center Foundation Portal.
