Ranked twentieth nationally, the University of California field hockey team travels up Interstate 80 this weekend to face regional rival UC Davis on Sunday at 1:00 PM at the Aggie Field Hockey Facility in Davis. Entering Sunday's nonconference contest with a 7-5 overall record and a 1-4 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play, the Golden Bears aim to regain winning momentum before closing out their regular season slate with three consecutive ACC matchups. Athletic officials in Berkeley confirmed that the squad completed full-speed turf preparations at Underhill Field on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Bears enter the regional road test after dropping two tightly contested home games at Underhill Field in Berkeley against top-ten conference opponents, falling 2-0 to eighth-ranked Wake Forest before suffering a 3-2 overtime loss to third-ranked Duke. Despite those narrow setbacks against elite national contenders, Cal has dominated the recent historical series against its Northern California neighbor, posting a perfect 9-0 record against UC Davis since 2021. Meanwhile, the host Aggies hold a 3-8 record this season and have been outscored 28-11 in total goals.

Co-head coach Steve Danielson emphasized that Sunday's matchup provides a critical opportunity to refine the team's pace and execution between the 25-yard lines. Danielson noted that the coaching staff and players are always practicing to be quicker than their opponents, making the Sunday afternoon contest another valuable opportunity to keep working on those rapid offensive and defensive transitions. Youth field hockey programs across Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda, and Walnut Creek closely follow the Golden Bears' regional schedule.

University athletic department officials and conference scheduling committees highlighted that maintaining regional nonconference matchups against Northern California universities reduces student-athlete travel fatigue amid demanding cross-country ACC road trips. Campus athletic board representatives noted that Cal's competitive performance against top-ranked Duke and Wake Forest keeps the program solidly in contention for postseason consideration. Winning Sunday's nonconference finale is vital for protecting the Bears' top-20 national ranking ahead of the final conference stretch.

Following the trip to Davis, the Golden Bears will return to Underhill Field on Haste Street in Berkeley to prepare for their final regular season conference matchups.
