UC Berkeley Journalism School Launches Emeryville Today Independent Digital Newsroom
Non-profit civic reporting initiative provides daily investigative coverage of municipal governance, local housing, and environmental justice in Alameda County.

The UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism announced the official expansion of its local news network on Tuesday with the launch of Emeryville Today, a dedicated non-profit digital news organization providing independent public-interest coverage of Emeryville and neighboring East Bay communities. Operating out of North Gate Hall in Berkeley with field reporting bureaus across Park Avenue, the publication deploys graduate student journalists and veteran investigative editors to cover city council deliberations, housing developments, and school board accountability.
The launch addresses a growing local news deficit in compact East Bay municipalities where legacy commercial newspapers have sharply reduced daily reporting staff over the past decade. Emeryville Today will publish daily articles, municipal agenda previews, and investigative enterprise packages covering everything from biotechnology industrial rezonings to shoreline park access and tenant protections. All published reporting is made freely available without paywalls or subscription barriers to ensure equitable community access.
Emeryville community leaders, school district trustees, and neighborhood advocates welcomed the initiative, highlighting that vigorous journalistic scrutiny strengthens public transparency and encourages broader civic participation in municipal policy. The project is funded through philanthropic journalism grants and dedicated university public-service endowments, with student reporters receiving intensive training in public records requests, data analysis, and professional ethics.
Readers, residents, and civic organizations can read current investigative articles, subscribe to free email digests, and submit news tips online at journalism.berkeley.edu or emeryvilletoday.org. Inquiries regarding editorial partnerships and student internship programs can be directed to the UC Berkeley Local News Initiative Monday through Friday at (510) 596-4300. The editorial board will host a community listening forum at the Emeryville Senior Center on November 10.
