One of Mill Valley's oldest restaurant spaces has reopened with a Peruvian-Japanese culinary program as Lima Nikkei debuted at 17 Throckmorton Avenue, while in downtown San Francisco the historic Curran Theatre added a Feb. 13, 2027 live stage stop for Tyler Henry's An Evening of Hope and Healing tour, according to Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026 reports by Eileen Vargas and Nina Singh-Hudson for Hoodline (Mill Valley restaurant report and San Francisco Curran Theatre report).
Lima Nikkei Brings 125-Seat Peruvian-Japanese Dining to 17 Throckmorton Avenue
Founded by Edwin Sandoval—a native of Lima, Peru, who worked in family restaurants in the 1970s, moved to Novato in 1982, and spent 35 years in construction as owner of Atlas Construction—Lima Nikkei occupies the 125-seat space at 17 Throckmorton Avenue in Mill Valley, according to reporting by Leanne Battelle in the Marin Independent Journal cited by Hoodline.
The building originally opened as a French restaurant in 1947 and operated for decades as El Paseo. In 2011, musician Sammy Hagar and chef Tyler Florence reopened it as a steakhouse before Hagar sold the property in 2019 to owners who ran Paseo: A California Bistro for 5 years until it closed on Dec. 20, 2025. Sandoval personally oversaw the interior renovation, sandblasting whitewashed brick walls back to their original brick tone, refinishing dark wood floors to a lighter shade, installing vertical Japanese-style wood slats along the bar, preserving the back room's colored glass windows and rafters, and replacing 56 light fixtures.
Sandoval's grandson Lukas Sandoval manages day-to-day operations while studying business at the College of Marin, and Claudia Sandoval manages bookkeeping and marketing. In the kitchen, chef Wilmer Anaya—also from Lima and formerly of La Mar Cebichería Peruana in San Francisco—prepares a Nikkei menu sourced from San Francisco's Four Star Seafood & Provisions and Chicago's Allen Brothers:
- Raw Bar & Maki: 6 ceviches—including yellowfin tuna in citrus ají amarillo leche de tigre with wasabi and shredded nori, and octopus ceviche with black olive emulsion and chimichurri—alongside 4 maki rolls such as shrimp tempura with cebichera sauce and yellowtail with cilantro, jalapeño, and yuzu mayo.
- Robata & Entrees: Miniature tableside Japanese robata grills with chicken, beef tenderloin, wild salmon, Spanish octopus, and mushrooms, plus lomo saltado, Peruvian chile coconut-milk udon, bao de chicharrón with rocoto gochumayo, Hokkaido scallop with aged parmesan foam, and Australian wagyu New York strip and filet mignon with yuca fries.
- Cocktail Program & Hours: Developed with Lee Bustamante, cocktails include the Paseo Sour (pisco, matcha, shochu, yuzu, black sesame syrup), the Miso Elixir (pisco, shochu, sake, miso bonito cordial with a sweet potato anticucho), and the Amazonian Geisha (Haku vodka, camu camu, ume plum liqueur). Lima Nikkei (
(415) 384-8197) is open 4 to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 4 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
