Voters in California's Central Valley shifted toward Democratic challenger Randy Villegas in early returns for the redrawn 22nd Congressional District, while travelers preparing for Thanksgiving and winter flights faced a second 2026 baggage fee increase from JetBlue tied to elevated jet fuel costs.

Democrat Randy Villegas Leads Incumbent David Valadao in Redistricted District 22

Early election-night returns showed Democrat Randy Villegas leading Republican incumbent Rep. David Valadao in California's 22nd Congressional District as supporters and union workers gathered for an 8:00 p.m. watch party at La Movida nightclub in Bakersfield, KVPR Kern County reporter Amaray Alvarez told Taylor Barton on KALW 91.7.

Valadao, who has won six—6—previous elections in the historically Republican-leaning district, faced a reshaped electorate after Proposition 50 redistricted the seat to be more competitive in response to Texas redistricting. Alvarez reported that Medicaid, Medicare, and household affordability were decisive issues in the 22nd District, which has one of the highest shares of residents enrolled in Medicaid nationwide, following Valadao's vote for federal legislation that reduced Medicaid funding.

JetBlue Raises First Checked Bag Fee to at Least $50 as Jet Fuel Averages $3.91 a Gallon

For air travelers booking holiday trips on or after November 3, JetBlue raised its checked baggage fees for the second time in 2026 across flights within the United States, Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean, KCBS Radio and the Associated Press reported.

Most economy passengers who pay at least 24 hours before departure will now pay $50 each way for a first checked bag during off-peak periods—up from $35 at the start of the year and $39 after a March increase—and $55 during peak Thanksgiving and winter holiday periods. Travelers who wait until the final 24 hours before departure will pay $60 during off-peak periods and $70 during peak travel. Fees for a second checked bag now start at $70 each way off-peak, $75 during peak periods, and reach up to $85 at the airport, though loyalty program members and eligible co-branded credit card holders continue to receive free checked bags.

JetBlue, which operates its flagship terminal at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, reported during its third-quarter—Q3—earnings call that its average fuel price reached $3.91 per gallon in summer 2026, up 57% from a year earlier, and is projected to average $4.64 per gallon during the final three months—Q4—of the year, an 85% year-over-year increase amid shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz that began in late February.
