The Workforce Development Board of Contra Costa County has announced a series of three interactive community input forums in early October to gather essential feedback from early childhood education providers, teachers, and local families. The public listening sessions, scheduled for October 5, October 7, and October 8, will examine workforce shortages, facility operating costs, and educational access across East Bay communities. County administrators organized the hybrid series to ensure that home-based child care operators, preschool teachers, and working parents can directly influence future municipal funding priorities.
Access to reliable, affordable early care and education represents one of the most critical economic challenges confronting working families throughout Lamorinda, Central County, and the Tri-Valley. Escalating commercial rents, regulatory compliance overhead, and low educator wages have forced numerous licensed child care centers and family day care homes to reduce enrollment or close permanently. By establishing direct communication channels between child care professionals and workforce policymakers, the upcoming forums aim to create sustainable financial pipelines that expand available classroom slots for local children.
The Workforce Development Board operates under the direction of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors and collaborates closely with the California Department of Social Services and First 5 Contra Costa to strengthen the regional economy. Federal and state child care block grants have provided temporary relief in recent years, but county leaders recognize that long-term workforce retention requires systemic local intervention. Insights gathered from these October forums will directly inform the county's forthcoming multi-year strategic investment plan and guide future grant allocations for early learning workforce stabilization.
The consultation series launches on Monday, October 5, with a virtual session conducted entirely in Spanish from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm via Zoom. The second forum will take place in person on Wednesday, October 7, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Delta First 5 Center, located at 760 First Street in Brentwood, with a complimentary dinner provided for registered attendees. The final session is scheduled for Thursday, October 8, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at the Contra Costa County Office of Education at 77 Santa Barbara Road in Pleasant Hill, also featuring a complimentary dinner and on-site translation services.
Following the conclusion of the October sessions, agency researchers will synthesize provider testimonies into a comprehensive policy roadmap that will be presented to county supervisors during a public hearing this winter. Community members, licensed family child care providers, and center directors are strongly encouraged to register in advance to assist organizers with meal planning and language accommodation services. Interested participants can reserve seats or submit written commentary by visiting the Contra Costa County Workforce Development Board website or contacting the department office in Concord.
